Launchers
YDR officially recommends Prism Launcher for all platforms. The Modrinth Launcher is a great option for more casual players and works well on macOS and Windows. We do NOT recommend the official launcher as it is slow and does not implement important features like multi-instancing very well.
Mods
When installing mods be sure to read the rules to make sure you aren't breaking them. A lot of popular quality-of-life mods can provide features that are not allowed on YDR.
Sodium and Lithium are highly recommended performance mods and are always allowed.
Always make sure you are downloading mods from a trusted source! Modrinth and CurseForge are generally very trustworthy sources.
Platform-Specific
Players running Linux should always use Prism Launcher installed from their package manager. Flatpak installations can experience issues with dedicated GPUs.
Lockout
Specific instructions for playing lockout on both Java and Bedrock are available separately on the lockout website.
Privacy
Minecraft is owned by Microsoft which, like most tech companies, is evil. These trillion-dollar tech corporations do not value you, their customer, and will do anything to boost their profits, including spying on you by collecting your personal information, violating your consumer rights and right to repair, and limiting your ability to actually own products that you buy. For more information about how your rights are being eroded, I encourage you to visit the consumer rights wiki.
What does this mean for Minecraft?
Since being acquired by Microsoft, Minecraft has quietly implemented telemetry inside Minecraft, as well as a report system which lets Microsoft ban your account for messages you send on private servers like YDR. Additionally, Microsoft has been arbitrarily enforcing their EULA with complete disregard for due process or even a courtesy email, leaving players wondering what they did wrong. In some cases, they have enforced terms that players were never told about and never agreed to. This includes block-listing private Minecraft servers for having words like "shit" or "fuck" in their MOTD. The youtuber TheMisterEpic makes great content covering the shady and potentially illegal actions that Microsoft and Mojang have taken.
What does this mean for you?
For starters, you can protect yourself from being banned by using the NoChatReports mod. This provides a layer of protection against the unjust moderation system that Microsoft has forced upon you.
You can also use the NoTelemetry mod to disable tracking on the client.
You can bypass the Mojang server block-list with the AnarchyMod mod.
Simply being aware of the situation is a great start. Spread the word. Do not let trillion dollar companies change the terms of the agreement you signed when you bought the game. Buying should be owning. If not, piracy isn't stealing. If you want to know more, please reach out or check out Louis Rossmann on YouTube.
